| Why We Have Happy Cows |
|
Most feedlot inductees are stressed on arrival due to transport, mustering, drafting, saleyards, co-mingling and induction. Stress is the precursor to almost all disease and death in feedlots and is detrimental to performance and eating quality. Our number one mission at Opal Creek is to minimize stress in the animals that we have responsibility over. Not only does it result in happy cows, but it also improves profitability and minimizes health issues.
Most modern feedlots can get the first three right most of the time. At Opal Creek, we aim to get all four right, all of the time. We have a unique and confidential stress relief program that animals begin at arrival. It is case-by-case as some animals are significantly more stressed than others. Our protocol has been developed by Will and Richard Lane and based on the amazing work of Bud Williams (USA) and Chris Donohoe (AUS), as well as input from Tom Noffsinger (USA). Chris has consulted to us over the last five years and we regard him as one of the leading intensive stock acclimation consultants in the industry. Chris also chooses to feed cattle at Opal Creek and is a long term client.
